Revoke Mosab Abu Toha's Pulitzer Prize for Betraying Truth and Erasing Victims' Suffering

We, the undersigned, stand with Emily Damari—a survivor of 500 days of unimaginable torment as a hostage in Gaza—and countless others whose pain has been mocked and erased by Mosab Abu Toha, the 2025 Pulitzer Prize recipient. The Pulitzer Prize Board's decision to honor Abu Toha is not just an oversight; it is a profound betrayal of truth, humanity, and the very principles the award claims to champion. We are heartbroken, outraged, and compelled to demand justice.

Emily Damari’s story is one of survival against unimaginable horror. On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists stormed her home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, shot her, and dragged her into Gaza. For nearly 500 days, she endured starvation, abuse, and dehumanization alongside 251 others—men, women, children, and elderly—ripped from their lives. Even now, her best friends, Gali and Ziv Berman, remain trapped in Hamas’s terror tunnels. Yet, Mosab Abu Toha dared to question her captivity, posting on Facebook, “How on earth is this girl called a hostage?” He denied the murder of the Bibas family, questioned the hostage status of Agam Berger, and spread lies about Israel’s actions, including the false claim that Israel bombed Al-Ahli Hospital.

These are not mere opinions. They are deliberate denials of documented atrocities, akin to Holocaust denial, that desecrate the memory of the murdered and deepen the wounds of survivors. By awarding Abu Toha a Pulitzer Prize for his essays, the Board has elevated a voice that erases victims, distorts truth, and fuels hatred. This is an insult to Emily, to every hostage, to every family grieving loved ones lost on October 7, and to the very concept of journalistic integrity.

We demand the following from the Pulitzer Prize Board:

  1. Revoke Mosab Abu Toha’s Pulitzer Prize: Rescind the 2025 award immediately, as his actions—denying hostages’ suffering, spreading disinformation, and vilifying victims—disqualify him from representing the Pulitzer’s commitment to truth and excellence.
  2. Issue a Public Apology: Acknowledge the pain inflicted on survivors like Emily Damari and the Jewish community by honoring a figure who mocks their trauma, and commit to repairing the damage done to the Pulitzer’s credibility.
  3. Institute Rigorous Vetting Processes: Implement mandatory reviews of nominees’ public statements and social media to prevent honoring individuals who promote hate, deny atrocities, or spread propaganda.
  4. Engage with Survivors: Invite hostages and their families to share their stories with the Board to ensure future decisions honor the humanity and truth of those who have suffered.
The Pulitzer Prize is meant to be a beacon of light, illuminating truth and uplifting human dignity. By honoring Mosab Abu Toha, you have cast a shadow over that legacy, siding with denial over survivors, lies over facts, and cruelty over compassion. We refuse to let this stand. We stand with Emily Damari, with Gali and Ziv Berman, with Agam Berger, and with every victim whose truth has been erased. Revoke this award. Restore the Pulitzer’s soul.
